Route Idea

so my friend Chris is going to ride to Alaska with me and this is the route we have planned out so far.

the idea is to ride up to Deadhorse, Alaska. its the end of the road in the Discovery show Ice Road Truckers and then take the ferry from Whittier, AK to Bellingham, WA so we get to see the Alaskan coast too.

the downside to the ferry idea is that it will cost us almost 1,300 dollars

and 2,200 miles of riding would likely cost us less than 300 bucks.

who needs a truck when you have a KLR?

I added a bar riser and Kitty helped me install it safely.

Kitty sat on the back and supervised my work

I took my new crash guards down to a friends shop so I could install them out of the rain.

I bought goodies for my KLR

the airplane mod adds about .1 horse power and a few lbs of up force which really help the KLR in parking lots

here is the shiny reflection from the rear of my new boxes

the KLR wanted to go see the snow so I took the boxes out on a shakedown test

things that will be handy

Well I found a website called http://findmespot.com/en/ that has little tracking devices you can take with you on trips. Some people use them so they can be rescued and some people use them just so people can see where they have been. Im going to look into taking one with me just so other people can watch my adventure. It will be better than google location because it works off of satellite. Where Im going I wont have a lot of internet access or cell phone service.

A guy I know Mic, is currently on his own arctic motorcycle trip and he has run into something I hadnt thought of much yet. His bank is not letting him access his money in canada. Now I dont know if its just a glitch or if him not talking to his bank in advance caused the issue but the point is you go hungry and run out of fuel if you cant get money. He says his cards show the visa sticker and aught to work anywhere visa is taken but you need this to get sorted out before you get stuck somewhere with no access to funds.

I have also discovered two fuel carrying systems. Rotopax and
Kolpin flat fuel tanks

These tanks would offer me some extended range which will be needed on a few legs of the trip. They aren't as elegant as an auxiliary tank built into the bike but it is a good idea to keep in mind.
